  • Seed Selection
  • Processing the Seed Harvest

The first three days are on seed saving and the second three are on preparation for and working on Permaculture and seed saving projects.

The Teachers
Michel and Jude Fanton and guest lecturers. Jude and Michel have worked in Permaculture since 1983. Since 1995, they have initiated seed networks in the Solomon Islands, Cuba and Cambodia and consulted on strategies for preserving traditional food varieties in the UK, India, Japan Nepal, Tonga and for ten countries in Africa. They offer what they have learnt during this overseas development work and fifteen years of running The Seed Savers' Network in Australia to people who have an interest in working overseas or in community projects on seeds and Permaculture.

Teaching Style
Participatory and practical with many exercises in the garden and with seeds. All previous groups in this course so far have experienced a strong sense of camaraderie and group learning. Most meals are shared and some cooked together.

Participants
This is a course for people who are willing to work as volunteers on Permaculture and Seed Savers initiated projects. The course aims to help people who have knowledge of horticulture, household food production, environmental management, computers, health, nutrition, etc., to prepare themselves to be volunteers in community projects either overseas or in Australia.
Last course in Oct 2005 there were participants from Argentina, Puerto Rico, Solomon Islands and East Timor.

The Venue
One acre gardens near the sea two kilometres south of the Byron Bay Post Office with food forest, creek, seed producing garden, bamboo grove, orchard laid out by continent of origin and ponds. The Seed Centre houses The Seed Savers' Network offices and seed bank too.

Accommodation
There are many options in Byron Bay including a camping ground not far from the Seed Centre. Some people may be squeezed in in the shed.
