Alice Springs Seed Savers
Date Founded:
2003-10
Our group has been established for quite a few years now and over the years we have sourced a number of local plants that have been grown in the Alice climate for many years. We also have a good knowledge of what will grow when and have produced a publication called, "The Alice Springs Vege Garden Companion", which is available at the local library. There is a great seasonal planting guide inside.
We meet about four times a year and have a couple of stalls each year for promotion of Seed Savers.
Always looking for more members - membership is free - we simply add you to the mailing list
We are looking for a person with skills to update our webpage and manage mailouts and notices.
Also if you have a few free hours - we always have seed packaging to do. Its a great way to contribute if you can't contribute in the way of seeds or if you can't make meetings. Call Chris and we can organise it.
Seedbank
The seedbank will be available at all meetings and you are of course welcome to bring any seed that you would like to contribute to the seed bank.
There are a list of available seeds on the blog address below.
I have started a blog on growing food in Alice Springs called "under the mulberry tree"
I’ll do it up now for tomorrow morning so it will go to air between 6:15and 6:30amand then hopefully they’ll play it on the Country Hour at midday. They may not so I can only hope!
The next meeting is this Saturday 27th February 2010. It is timed well for all who want to get serious about their winter garden this year. There is still time to prepare soil if you haven’t already done so.
For me the brassicas are the star performers over winter but there’s so much more as you would know. The Brassicas are good to get in early - See my blog link if you want to see what I am planting http://alicebackyard.blogspot.com/
I also encourage people to bring in any seed packets they may have purchased from Eden Seeds etc as I always find I never use all of the seeds in them - then they go out of date.
This meeting will focus on raising seeds/ seedlings and soil preparation for the winter garden, but I’m sure there will be some seed sorting on the side. This will be followed by seed swapping and people are free to take seeds from the seed collection.
Last meeting round up
