Clearly written by one of our former interns, and beautifully illustrated, this 70 page book is a practical guide for saving seeds in the villages of the Pacific. We provide it as a pdf here as it is out of print.
This is a pdf of an abbreviated translation done by the Bulgarian Seed Savers. If you have any comments please email michel@seedsavers.net. We are working in the Balkans over the next few years and would love to make contacts.

Dryland Permaculture Seed Savers
Date Founded:
2001-10
My name is Julie Firth and I have turned a passionate urge to save and acclimatise food plant seeds into a non-profit business of which my nursery operations financially support. I started a seed company, "Yilgarn Traders Chemical free seeds" as a way to get these seed out to people as I haven't been able to continue to do it without money. I am small-scale and all our work is done by hand.
I often speak in the "we" because although I am the driver, main worker and financial supporter of our seed saving, I have many people at different times, helping and supporting my ideals.
If you want to see any of the plants we curate our gardens are located at 'Drylands Permaculture Farm and Nursery'. Our website is www.permaculturenursery.com.au.
I began this in the early nineties when I was a one of the few seedsavers in the district and knew of no other people seedsaving.
Today we run the drylands seedsavers group from here and we often take volunteers and interested seed savers on thursdays and fridays. Our focus is on teaching people how to save reliable seed themselves. This can be experienced in a hands-on capacity in our Permaculture gardens.
- seed collection, cleaning, drying and drying happens mainly during spring and summer. (September to January)
- the bulk of seed propagation happens at the beginning of winter (April-June)
We are also always looking for volunteers through the year to help with packeting of seed for sale. It is a great way to learn more about seeds, their viability times and the right times for planting in our climate.
We love to trade and try new varieties of veges that other people have acclimatised and occasionally run workshops on seedsaving which are always advertised on our website.
Living in a remote part of Australia doesn't always allow people to visit us to learn, although we take people through the wwoofers scheme and are prepared to take seed savers on a similar basis. We also can offer seed saving support through our email.
If you are interested in seed saving, we would love to hear from you and find out you are up to especially if you live in a dryland environment in the north west or inland W.A, even if you don't live locally.
Hope to hear from you whether you are a beginner or an experienced seed saver.
