Violet Town Seed Savers

Date Founded:
2001-05

Violet Town Seed Savers meet monthly on the first Sunday at 1.30pm.  The meetings are held at members homes, or other properties of interest.  4 or 5 meetings a year are set aside as dedicated seed days only, and these are generally held at the community garden at the primary school.  During these meetings seeds are cleaned, added to the collection & recorded, the excess are packed for sale, information about varieties is shared & recorded.  Our excess seeds are sold at 3 monthly markets around the region for $1 a packet.  The money earned is used to buy books or other resources for the group and to make donations to various organisations, schools, charities etc .  In April Monika will take our collection to Buxton for the Sustainability Festival and give away seeds.

We enjoy trialling out new varieties of seeds as well as keeping going the tried and true varieties that do well for us in this region.  A new variety recently acquired we have named 'Golden Buddha" (ref. Cornucopia) which is a climbing butter bean from Europe, and it's being grown on this season in a few gardens - it will be interesting to see if it's any hardier than the bush butter beans which in our hot summers here now seems to need some shade.

If you would like to contact us, please phone Terry on 5790 8635 or Monika on 5797 2695.  If you would like to receive our seed list please email Monika at monika.boyce@ycs.com.au   Seeds may be purchased by contacting Monika.
