Seed Savers Network Virtual Tour

1 Seed Centre Entrance

As you enter the Seed Centre, you're greeted with collections of bamboos, bromeliads, palms and members of the ginger family (Zingerberaceae) which surround the driveway. A centre island is the focal point of the entrance and many unusual plants call it their home. The tarmac apron is used for germination and vigour tests because of its heat storing capacity. Driving around the circular driveway you will find shaded parking spots between the trees.

At the entrance is a bodhi tree (left), under which Buddha found enlightment, a coconut and a Alphonse Kerr Bamboo (Bambusa multiplex) The entrance also has a totem pole then palms, bamboos, purple Tibouchina and Mexican tree daisy.

In the centre of the driveway - New Zealand spinach on the left, colourful Canna, centre, and Bromeliads on the right. Bromeliads grow in the gloom of the rainforest floor and axils of trees and have spectacular flowers.

In the centre of the driveway is a group of local native Bangalow palms (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana) with a staghorn on one of them. In the front of this picture at left, is the curry tree. The herbal panacea, Aloe vera, is growing near the entrance so that it is handy for relieving sunburn, cuts and abrasions.

Germination tests are kept on the apron of the driveway during winter so they are warmed by the westerly sun. Jude (left) and Michel at the entrance of the seed bank.

The concrete of the back porch is softened by pots of foliage plants and trees awaiting planting. Jude and Michel with their favourite banner.
