Seed Savers Network Virtual Tour

22 Permaculture Fruity Forest

These hills were formed in October 1998 from dirt that had come from a development site nearby. At first they were planted with legume cover crops of different sizes, then the fruit trees. Sweet potatoes were added to smother the weeds and the whole thing left virtually to itself to develop. There has been no need for a watering system to be laid on. Vegetables and spices are grown under the young trees.

January 1998 and there are just pine trees and grass on the low part of the new Seed Centre grounds October 1998 and subsoil and topsoil from a nearby development is brought in to create four hills.

October 1999 and the growth is quite phenomenal for one year. Volunteer, Marie Browne, and interns, Cheze, Megumu Ogata and Nikki Warwick are dwared by the trees in May 2001.

Jude is surrounded by greenery in the fruity forrest! A young mango is on the left and gingers in the understory. Bananas give shade to younger trees like the ice cream bean, right, which will eventually emerge as the canopy of this area.
