5 Mediterranean Garden

In the area between the house and road, a terraced orchards have been planted by continent of origin. The most westerly, well-drained area has plants originating around the Mediterranean, including olives, figs, mulberry, wormwood, bay laurel, henna, pomegranate, valerian, and oregano.

Some of the ground cover - oregano, valerian and vegetables. The original area (here shown in May 1998) was bare lawn with two small trees in it.

As there was only six inches of topsoil, extra was brought in and formed into three levels of terraces in August 1999. Participants of the training course in October 1999 helped to smother the Kikuyu grass Pennisetum clandestinum) that came with the topsoil with a lot of newspaper.

The newspaper was laid on very thickly around the young trees, with 100 per cent overlap resulting in 100 per cent success. April 2000 and the six month old garden is doing well, with plenty of mulch and green manure shrubs and ground covers.
