6 South and Central American Garden


Many common plants originate in South and Central America. Seed Savers' collection includes many varieties of guavas and sapotes, pineapples, pawpawss, bixa (lipstick tree), strawberries, tobacco and taro.



Paw paws, pineapples, Pintow peanuts, Peruvian parsnip, black sapote and acerola cherry in The Americas These small yellow and red tomatoes, originating in the Americas, grow well in the garden.

Flower of the Spanish Red Pineapple which originated in South America. While the fruits are deep red, the flowers are iridescent blue. Guatemalan Spinach which we think is Alternanthera sissoo. The flower on the right is a paw paw flower! This is a spinach that is prolific and easy to grow, and delicious!

Velvet beans Mucuna spp. that originate in South America and are prolific bearers. Amaranth seed head. Amaranth is a nutritious grain crop that the Incas grew.
Bixa seeds have a red pulp that is now used in many lands to make lipstick and to colour food. Tabasco Chilli(Capsicum frutescens), also called Bird's Eye Chilli, is a never ending source of high quality chillies.
