9 Pacific Food Garden

Plants that Pacific Islanders like to grow and eat - taro, cassava, slippery cabbage (Hibiscus esculentus), blue banana tree; and the magic and ritual plant - Cordyline terminalis.

A taro border around the lush greenery of root and leaf crops. Michel holding a yam from the Pacific bed - it is a starch crop, like the cassava on the left behind him (two strains).

The Pacific Food Garden is dominated by bananas, paw paw and sugar cane. Cassava, also known as tapioca is a staple in much of the world. It originated in the savannah of Brazil and is best eaten roasted in our opinion.

Here the massive tubers are being harvested by interns Rhys and Shinji. They must be eaten within twenty four hours of harvest.
